Our Range of Anodes for Boats

There are 100+ anodes and anode fittings in this category, each listed by part number with the motors it fits. That includes anodes for Evinrude motors, which BRP stopped building in 2020, and older Johnson and OMC models.

  • Yamaha. Trim tab anodes (61A-45371-00, 67C-45371-00, counter-rotating 6K1-45371-02), cavitation plate and bracket anodes (6G1-45251-03, 6AW-45251-00), and internal cylinder anodes (62Y-11325-00, 6E5-11325-00).
  • Mercury, Mariner and MerCruiser. Trim tab anodes including a long-leg version, plate, nut and waffle plate anodes, trim ram and engine anodes, a Bravo 3 prop nut anode, and aluminium anodes 97-893404 and 97-880653.
  • Suzuki, Honda and Tohatsu. Gear case, button, bar and trim tab anodes, including Suzuki 55321-90J01, Honda 06411-ZW1-000 and Tohatsu 3C8-60217-1, plus the Suzuki anode O-ring 09280-22019.
  • OMC and Volvo. OMC bearing carrier and transom bar anodes, the 23 to 35hp OMC aluminium kit (434029), Volvo outdrive ring and bar anodes, and zinc inboard anode kits.

Most of the range is made up of zinc anodes for boats and outboards running in salt water, and most product names state the material. Where one doesn’t, check the product page or ask us.

Zinc or Aluminium?

When choosing a sacrificial anode, boat owners should go by the water the boat spends most of its time in. If it moves between water types, inspect the anodes more often and change them as needed.

  • Zinc. Zinc anodes for boats are the traditional saltwater choice. Anode makers don’t recommend them for fresh water.
  • Aluminium. Rated for salt and brackish water, and longer-lasting than zinc because of its higher capacity. That makes it the better fit for estuary moorings and boats that work between the river and offshore.

Don’t mix zinc and aluminium on the same outboard or sterndrive. The aluminium anodes end up trying to protect the zinc. If you’re changing alloy, change every anode at once.

Why Anodes Wear Too Fast, or Not at All

Anode wear tells you how hard corrosion is working on the motor, so read it before you replace it.

Wearing faster than usual. Mercury’s corrosion guidance names the conditions that drive it: time sitting in the water, a connection to shore power, a stainless steel propeller, and warmer water, which is more conductive. A boat on a warm Queensland mooring, plugged into shore power and running a stainless prop, has all four working against it. Mercury also warns that a broken bonding wire, or one left disconnected after a service, accelerates galvanic corrosion.

Not wearing at all. Mercury points out that a boat motor anode which never corrodes is a bad sign, not a good one. Check for paint on the anode, a mounting surface that isn’t clean and free of paint, a disconnected bond, or a surface film. Mercury says a stiff brush will remove the film. The last thing to check is the wrong alloy for the water, such as zinc on a boat kept in fresh water.

Where to Check on Your Boat Motor

Mercury lists the gearcase, transom bracket and trim rams as the usual places to find a boat motor anode. A full check covers:

  • The trim tab, which Yamaha notes also serves as an anode, plus any plate, block or button anodes on the lower unit
  • The transom bracket anode and the anodes on the trim rams
  • Internal anodes in the cylinder head or block. Yamaha’s manuals call for these to be inspected too, and they’re the ones out of sight. On Yamaha they carry 11325 in the part number.
  • Bearing carrier, prop nut and outdrive anodes on sterndrives

Replacing and Fitting a Sacrificial Anode

A sacrificial anode on a boat gives less protection as it dissolves, so Mercury’s guideline is to replace anodes when they are 50 percent consumed. Inspect them often if you run in salt water, and plan on replacing them at least once a year.

  • Yamaha’s manuals say to set the trim tab so the steering needs the same force to turn left or right. Mark its angle before you remove it and refit the new one to the same position.
  • Make sure the mounting surface is clean and free of paint.
  • Renew the grommet or O-ring where one is used: grommet 66M-11328-00 for Yamaha pencil anodes, O-ring 09280-22019 for Suzuki.
  • Never paint an anode. Yamaha’s manuals say paint makes it ineffective, and Mercury says to mask off or remove anodes when painting nearby.

Matching an Anode by Part Number

If the old anode is too worn to read, match from the motor: model and serial number first, then the parts diagram. Our Yamaha serial number lookup and Mercury serial number guide show where to find both and how to read them.

Check the year range on the listing as well. Yamaha anode 67F-11325-00 is listed for 1999 to 2004 motors and 67F-11325-01 for 2010 on, while 68V-11325-01 covers 2004 to 2006 and 68V-11325-02 covers 2007 to 2009.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the anodes on my outboard?

When they are about half consumed, which is Mercury’s guideline. Inspect them often if you run in salt water, and replace them at least once a year.

Can I use aluminium anodes instead of zinc?

Yes, in salt or brackish water, as long as you change every anode on the motor at the same time. Don’t mix the two alloys.

Why is my anode coated and not wearing?

In some water conditions anodes build up a surface film that stops them working, and Mercury recommends removing it with a stiff brush. If the boat lives in fresh water, zinc is the wrong alloy.

Why are my anodes wearing out so quickly?

Common causes are long periods in the water, shore power, a stainless prop and warm water. A broken bonding wire also accelerates corrosion, so check the bonding if wear has suddenly increased.

How fast will my anodes ship?

Orders placed before 2pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day. Shipping is free on orders over $50, or you can collect from our Kunda Park warehouse on the Sunshine Coast, 9am to 3pm weekdays.

Do you offer trade pricing?

Yes. Businesses can apply for a trade account.
