What an Outboard Carburettor Does

The carburettor is the part that mixes air and fuel in the right ratio and feeds it to the cylinders. On a carburetted outboard there is no computer trimming the mixture for you. The jets, needle and seat, float and passages inside the carby do it mechanically, and they only work properly when every one of those passages is clean and every gasket seals. A 2-stroke outboard often runs a carburettor per cylinder, so a twin or triple can have two or three carbs that all need to be in tune together.

Because the tolerances inside a carburettor are tiny, it is the most fault-prone part of the fuel system. A jet the width of a pin can block with a speck of varnish and turn a smooth-running motor into one that stalls, hesitates and refuses to idle. The good news is that a carby is also one of the cheapest parts to service, and a rebuild kit costs a fraction of the powerhead it protects.

Common Outboard Carburettor Problems

Most carburettor faults show up as one of a handful of symptoms. Hard starting, especially after the boat has sat for a few weeks, usually means fuel has gone off and gummed the jets. A rough idle or stalling at trolling speed points to a blocked idle circuit or pilot jet. Hesitation, bogging or a flat spot when you open the throttle is a sign the main jet or accelerator circuit is starved or dirty. Flooding, fuel weeping from the carby, or a strong fuel smell often means a stuck float or a worn needle and seat letting too much fuel through.

The common thread is fuel. Old, dirty or water-contaminated fuel is behind the vast majority of carburettor problems, which is why a clean fuel system upstream of the carby matters so much. Fit a quality boat fuel water separator and change your outboard fuel filters on schedule and you will prevent most carby faults before they start.

Why Ethanol Fuel Wrecks Carburettors

In Australia, standard unleaded is commonly sold as E10, which contains up to 10 per cent ethanol. Ethanol is hard on carburetted outboards for two reasons. It attracts and holds water, and once the fuel absorbs enough moisture the water and ethanol separate out and sink to the bottom of the tank, where it gets drawn into the carby first and causes corrosion and rough running. Ethanol also acts as a solvent that breaks down over time, leaving varnish and gum deposits that block the fine jets and passages.

Petrol with ethanol starts to oxidise within a couple of weeks of being pumped and can be gummy enough to clog jets within six. If your boat sits between trips, that is how carbs end up needing a clean. The defence is straightforward: avoid leaving ethanol fuel in the tank for long periods, use a marine fuel stabiliser in every tank, and run the carby dry before extended storage. When prevention fails, a rebuild kit puts it right.

Rebuild or Replace? Choosing Between a Kit and a New Carburettor

For most carburettor problems, a rebuild kit is the right first move. If the carby body is sound and the trouble is gum, varnish or worn soft parts, a kit with new gaskets, O-rings, needle and seat, float spec and jets will return it to as-new performance for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. A thorough clean and a fresh kit fixes the large majority of faults.

Replace the whole carburettor when the body itself is damaged: corroded or pitted castings from long-term water contamination, stripped threads, a warped mating face that will not seal, or a throttle shaft worn so loose it draws air. If you have already cleaned and rebuilt a carby and it still will not run right, a corroded body is often the reason. How to Rebuild an Outboard Carburettor

A carburettor rebuild is a patient bench job rather than a difficult one. Work clean, keep your parts in order, and allow an afternoon for a first attempt:

  1. Turn off the fuel, disconnect the battery, and note how the linkages and hoses connect before you remove anything
  2. Remove the carburettor from the engine and drain the residual fuel from the bowl
  3. Strip the carby down, keeping each jet, needle and gasket in order as you go
  4. Soak the metal body and jets in carburettor cleaner, then blow every passage clear with compressed air
  5. Inspect the float, needle and seat, and throttle shaft for wear, and check the body for corrosion
  6. Reassemble with the new gaskets, O-rings, needle and seat and jets from the rebuild kit, setting the float height to spec
  7. Refit the carburettor, reconnect the linkages and fuel, and prime the system
  8. Start the motor, let it warm, and adjust the idle and mixture screws to the manufacturer’s settings

Bundle Your Carburettor Service With These Parts

A carburettor only stays clean if the fuel reaching it is clean, so service the rest of the fuel system at the same time. Fit or renew a boat fuel water separator to stop water reaching the carby, replace your outboard fuel filters while you are at it, and check the outboard fuel pumps and primer bulb for cracking or weak delivery.
